HTML The first University of Edinburgh Innovative Learning Week took place between 20 and 24 February 2012. ‘Normal’ teaching was suspended for this week, and instead the week was used as an opportunity for experimentation and innovation in areas which may normally be constrained by the curriculum. The School of Economics was very keen for everyone to participate fully in this week and some of these events had been arranged or suggested by students. Schedule of Events Monday - Convergence to Competitive Equilibrium with Speed Dating Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 1, 6-8pm First year students, can economics help you improve your dating skills? There is only one way to find out: Speed dating: Do it like economists! Image Each lady and gentleman sit, face to face, to see if they have "bargaining chemistry" Pick and choose, every 2 minutes, the mate who will drive your “utility” levels crazy Increase your “surplus”, or find the "bargain" of your life One group were buyers the other sellers and you had to match up with someone from the other group by agreeing a price. The person who performed best won £100. Limited places. Unlimited innovative learning & fun! Only places for 20 boys and 20 girls, they signed up on Economics 1A WebCT Tuesday - Practice assessment centre workshop (group exercises) 31 Buccleuch Place, Room 1.01, 9am - 12noon Assessment centres are a common feature of the recruitment process for many graduate employers and effective preparation is essential to ensure a good performance. This interactive session explored the range of activities that you might expect as part of an assessment centre, what employers are looking for and how they measure your performance. Students also had the opportunity to experience some group exercises similar to those used in assessment centres and to reflect on their performance. The Careers Service ran this workshop but it was limited to a maximum of 12 students (honours level only). Students signed up for it on the Economics Honours WebCT page. If you liked the sound of it but didn't get the chance to take part this time, the Careers Service run this a few times during the semester so check their website for future workshops. Dissertation meeting David Hume Tower, Lecture Theatre B, 1-2pm Third year students got the chance to hear from 4th year students, who were a week from submission, about their dissertation experience. Students learned the different types of dissertation they could do and also got tips on how to approach the dissertation. There was also information on supervisors and what to do next. Tuesday - CV workshops and mock interviews: The Mock Interviews 31 Buccleuch Place, 2-4pm Several members of TeachFirst, Barclays Capital, and PwC were in attendance to give many students the opportunity to undertake a mock interview. These interviews were highly challenging, and were an opportunity that students otherwise would not receive. Each company then decided on the student that they believed to have given the best interview, and, as a prize, a partner of each firm took the winning student out for lunch To apply, students sent a copy of their CV in PDF format to econ.ilw@gmail.com with the subject line 'INTERVIEW'. They listed in descending order of preference the firm by whose representative they would most like to be interviewed. Those selected to participate were informed by e-mail. econ.ilw@gmail.com The CV Workshops David Hume Tower, Lecture Theatre B, 4.10-5pm Students were given advice about how to put together a first-class CV and cover letter, and given advice about applications generally. Tuesday - Freakonomics at the Cameo Image There was a special viewing of Freakonomics the Movie, at the Cameo Picturehouse, 38 Home Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9LZ on Tuesday 21 February at 8pm. Admission tickets cost £2 and were available from the Undergraduate Office at 21 Buccleuch Place or from the Student Experience Officer, Room 2.13, 31 Buccleuch Place. 225 tickets were available - first come, first served. Wednesday - Coffee Morning, 10 am - 12 am Students helped the academic staff and the EconSoc Committee in efficiently and equitably dividing up some baked goods and coffee. They were free to ask questions about upcoming events, bring up their own ideas, or just bring a few friends and relax. David Hume Tower, Conference Room. Wednesday - AIESEC Information Session Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 1 at 5pm This was of interest to those looking for summer internships or short-term placements after graduation. Students were invited to join AIESEC Edinburgh for an information session to learn more about the internship opportunities they have. AIESEC, as the largest student organization in the world, facilitates over 15,000 work abroad placements a year and provides opportunities in over 100 different countries. This is the fourth year that this event has taken place. So far, the staff have won one match and the students two - what will the outcome be this year? Facebook School of Economics Blog Thursday - Panel Discussion and Credit Crunch Talk Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 4 1 pm - 3 pm The Credit Crunch Revisited Dr Tatiana Kornienko used some simple ideas from the theory of asymmetric information to show how decisions of many different individuals may result in a serious disruption to the financial system. While the phenomena covered in the lecture was accessible to all students, it was of particular interest to 3rd year and 4th year Economics students. They were able to see how the ideas that they have learnt in Topics in Economic Analysis 1 can be applied to understand the mechanisms behind the Credit Crunch. 3 pm - 5 pm Sovereign debt panel discussion Dr Simon Clark chaired a panel discussion on the sovereign debt crisis. The panel members were to include Bill Jamieson, editor of the Scotsman, Prof. Sevi Mora and Dr Robert Zymek. With the pace at which things were changing, it was best not to predict the details of the discussion but generally, the panel were to debate what has gone wrong and the best way forward. Friday - Game Theory Competition - 2nd year students Students competed against their Economics 2 classmates in a number of hypothetical strategic situations. First place prize: £100 Second place prize: £30 Third place prize: £20 4.06, 31 Buccleuch Place Friday 12-2pm Entry was limited to 30 students on a first come first served basis - they signed up on the Economics 2 WebCT page. Friday - Edinburgh University Trading and Investment Club presents Faces Of Finance: An Interview with Linda Yueh Dr Linda Yueh, Fellow in Economics at Oxford University, Adjunct Prof. of Economics at the London Business School and Economics Editor for Bloomberg TV, joined in a live interview led by Amy Armour, EconSoc's Head of Academic Affairs. The evening offered a very personal insight into financial and economic research and reporting, and into women's expanding roles in these fields. Martin Hall, New College, 4 pm - 6 pm HTML Sublime, But It Ended All Too Soon... Guests, alumni, staff and friends were invited to come together at the close of our week's events for networking, drinks, catching up, and exchanging a few last happy words before the night drew to an end.
