A message from Tim Worrall the Interim Head of School Image The National Student Survey (NSS) opens today (Monday 5th February). Do take 10 minutes to complete it. The NSS is a survey for all final year undergraduate students in UK universities. It is a unique opportunity to share with us your thoughts about your whole experience through all your years of study at the University of Edinburgh and the School of Economics. We will read all of your ratings and (anonymised) comments very carefully. It is an opportunity for you to help to identify improvements and shape the future student experience here at the University of Edinburgh and in particular, within the School of Economics. For example, in response to the NSS feedback in 2017, the School of Economics has provided improved information about assessment and marking criteria on individual courses. Course organisers have provided better information about changes they have made in their courses in response to your feedback and the feedback from the previous year. We know we can always do better and the School is working together representatives of the student body and other members of the University to enhance your learning experience. We are working toward providing extra study space for you and longer term the University is planning for an extensive redevelopment of the central campus area. Completing the NSS is also important because the results are widely published externally and used by future students to make informed choices about where and what to study. The survey is conducted by Ipsos MORI, an independent research agency, so your views are completely confidential. They hold your data for the purposes of the NSS only. Ipsos MORI may contact you directly to remind you to complete the survey by email, text message or telephone and the University has no control over how or when this happens. However, they will not contact you once you complete or opt out of the survey. Your opinion really does matter. Please take the time to complete the NSS before it closes on 30 April. It should only take about 10 minutes to complete - www.thestudentsurvey.com. Whilst we encourage you to complete the NSS as an anonymised method of feedback, we are here to listen. Your lecturers and tutors will welcome your constructive feedback on how the School can improve. As Head of School, I am available to talk to you in person, individually or in groups, or to receive your comments and suggestions via e-mail. We hope that you enjoy your final few months of study with us and wish you every success with your dissertation and in your final exams.
