I wonder if I am the only Economics student to become a social worker! After graduating in 1955, I completed a Child Care course at the London School of Economics and became a professionally qualified Social Worker. I then worked for local authorities as a Child Care Officer until I married in 1960.

My husband, Bill, is also an Edinburgh graduate - in Biochemistry. After time at home with our 3 children, I gradually returned to work, first becoming a part time tutor to a course for residential staff, then a social worker for voluntary homes, a lecturer in Social Work and for the last years of my working life, a Social Worker, and then Director of Adoption Services for a voluntary adoption society.

I have lived in Edinburgh since 1966 and since retiring have been involved with several voluntary organizations, including WRVS and Homestart. I sometimes look after some of our nine grandchildren and enjoy many sporting and other activities. Our sons are both graduates of Edinburgh - one is a Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, the other is a Consultant Anaesthetist. Our daughter is a staff nurse.
